A study on the Gut contents of live Juvenile Loggerhead Turtles, Caretta Caretta (Linnaeus) (Reptilia, Cheloniidae), from the South-Eastern part of the North Atlantic Ocean, with emphasis on Coelenterate Identification Naturalis
Nierop, M.M. van; Hartog, J.C. den.
The gut contents of five juvenile individuals of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta (L.) from waters around Madeira, Selvagem Grande (Selvagens Islands) and São Miguel (Azores) were analysed macro- and microscopically. Macroscopic investigations showed that epipelagic salps (e.g., Pyrosoma atlanticum Péron) and gastropods (e.g., Ianthina spp. and Pterotrachea spp.) constituted an important part of the food remains present in these loggerheads. To a lesser extent this also holds for organisms such as goose-barnacles (Lepas spp.). and Idotea metallica Bosc, which live on drifting materials, including algae. Microscopic examination revealed the presence in all turtles of large numbers of nematocysts, deriving mainly from Siphonophora and to a lesser extent...

DYMITILE – DYnamique MIgratoire des Tortues marines nidifiant dans les ILEs françaises de l'Océan Indien ArchiMer
Bourjea, Jerome; Ciccione, Stephane; Dalleau, Mayeul.

Magnetic navigation behavior and the oceanic ecology of young loggerhead sea turtles ArchiMer
Putman, Nathan F.; Verley, Philippe; Endres, Courtney S.; Lohmann, Kenneth J..
During long-distance migrations, animals navigate using a variety of sensory cues, mechanisms and strategies. Although guidance mechanisms are usually studied under controlled laboratory conditions, such methods seldom allow for navigation behavior to be examined in an environmental context. Similarly, although realistic environmental models are often used to investigate the ecological implications of animal movement, explicit consideration of navigation mechanisms in such models is rare. Here, we used an interdisciplinary approach in which we first conducted lab-based experiments to determine how hatchling loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) respond to magnetic fields that exist at five widely separated locations along their migratory route, and then...

Mercury and methylmercury in carapace of the marine turtle Caretta caretta, in northeastern Brazil and its potential for environmental monitoring Anais da ABC (AABC)
RODRIGUEZ,CÉSAR AUGUSTO B.; BEZERRA,MOISES F.; REZENDE,CARLOS EDUARDO DE; BASTOS,WANDERLEY R.; LACERDA,LUIZ D. DE.
Abstract: The present work tests the use of carapace fragments of the marine turtle Caretta caretta as a tool for environmental biomonitoring of mercury (Hg) and to evaluate the influence of biological and ecological factors in Hg concentrations. Samples of carapace fragments were obtained during the nesting season of 2012 and 2016 and were analyzed for their total-Hg and methyl-Hg concentrations and the isotopic composition of carbon and nitrogen (δ15N and δ13C). Seventy-six females were sampled, with an average size of 87.1 to 107 cm of curved carapace length (CCL). The results showed a wide variation in total Hg concentrations (3.3 – 1,672 ng g-1) and low concentrations of methyl-Hg, not showing any pattern of accumulation among the individuals. The...

Serum biochemistry profile determination for wild loggerhead sea turtles nesting in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Ciência Rural
Goldberg,Daphne Wrobel; Wanderlinde,Juçara; Freire,Isabel Maria Alexandre; Silva,Luiz Cesar Pereira da; Almosny,Nadia Regina Pereira.
Sea turtles are threatened to the point of extinction. The major goal of rehabilitating sick individuals is to eventually reintroduce them back into their habitat. In this way, they contribute to species preservation, as well as maintaining equilibrium of the ecosystems. Biochemical analysis is a commonly used test to detect illness and evaluate the general health of the animals. However, the data in the literature on sea turtles are scarce and the majority of studies used small sample sizes, being the majority of animals in captivity. The aim of the present study is to establish baseline biochemical profile values for free-ranging, nesting, female loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). The baseline values can then be used for comparison in the overall...
